It is my pleasure to kick off our series; “Sharing Our Client’s Stories.” I would like to introduce one our original outsourced accounting services clients – the American Cheese Society. Back in 2010, when the organization was transitioning from an association management company to a self-managed association, the Executive Director reached out to us with an inherited chart of accounts that was 20 pages long, along with a request to simplify their accounts and provide meaningful reports to ensure financial success. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to oversee this account from the beginning. It is a progressive organization that has grown from three staff members to seven staff members in five years. I am always excited to see what new programs we will be tracking in a financial role for the organization.

The Denver-based American Cheese Society (ACS) is the leader in promoting and supporting American cheeses. With nearly 1,500 members in the United States, Canada, and beyond, ACS provides the cheese community with educational resources and networking opportunities, while encouraging the highest standards of cheesemaking focused on safety and sustainability. The association’s membership represents all aspects of the specialty cheese world, from cheesemakers to cheesemongers, from distributors to restaurateurs – as well as enthusiasts who simply love discovering and experiencing fine cheeses.
Each summer, ACS hosts the leading educational conference and cheese judging in the Americas. The 32nd Annual ACS Conference & Competition took place July 29-August 1, 2015 in Providence, Rhode Island. ACS Cheese Camp 2015: Craft, Creativity, Community saw a record 1,200 industry members attend to network, sample products, and learn from industry experts. The annual cheese judging saw the largest number of companies (267) in ACS history enter nearly 1,800 different products – from yogurts and butters to cheddars and blue cheeses. All of these unique products were available for the public to taste in Providence at ACS’s signature special event, the Festival of Cheese. In order to make ACS Cheese Camp possible, more than 100 industry companies provided sponsorship support.
Highlights of ACS Cheese Camp included:
- The Certified Cheese Professional® Exam, offered for the fourth time to nearly 300 cheese professionals on-site in Providence.
- Unique tasting sessions such as “Pairing Principles of Cheese & Wine,” and “Delicious Molds & Mushrooms.
- “Meet the Cheesemaker” featuring 80+ producers from the US and Canada sampling their products to industry members.
- Public “Cheese Sale” to raise funds for the nonprofit American Cheese Education Foundation in support of cheesemaker scholarships.
The next ACS Conference & Competition will take place in Des Moines, Iowa. Cheese in the Heartland will take place July 27-30, 2016. The association will bring its events even closer to home – to Denver – in 2017. Denver locals will have the opportunity to sample hundreds of cheeses at the Festival of Cheese and shop the Cheese Sale! But locals don’t have to wait two years to sample products from ACS members: look for an ACS team at the Great American Beer Festival from September 24-26, 2015 at the Colorado Convention Center. They’ll be sampling more than 400 pounds of American artisan cheeses, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in the region.
