NFP Partners

LeRoy (Lee) A. Bengston, CPA

Managing Principal

Lee Bengston is the President of NFP Partners, which is aligned with Sage North America, a major worldwide business software publisher. NFP Partners provide accounting software and consulting to nonprofit and local government organizations. NFP Partners is nationally certified to resell and to support Sage MIP Fund Accounting software. Under Bengston’s direction since 2006, NFP Partners (formerly ASI Succeed in Nonprofit Solutions) has developed an innovative model to deliver accounting services to small- to mid-size nonprofit organizations leveraging the power of the MIP software.

For nearly four decades, Bengston has been a consultant for small businesses, state and local government agencies, and nonprofit organizations across the country. A Certified Public Accountant and a Colorado resident, Bengston has deep knowledge of accounting theory and practice, which he uses to assist his myriad clients to help them develop and implement financial information systems. Bengston’s professional experience serves as a strong anchor for NFP Partners. He spent 10 years as an active-duty Air Force officer and another 11 years in the Air Force Reserve. His military duty focused on logistics, financial management, and information technology. After leaving active military duty, Bengston served as a principal and executive vice president of an independent management consulting firm that provided information system planning, design, and project management services to clients nationwide. In the early 1980s, Bengston formed a software development company. Several years later, he formed Bengston & Associates — a value-added reseller of Sage and other vendor software, including Microsoft, Macola, and Sage. Eventually, the company would emerge as the major Sage reseller in Colorado, with 12 employees and more than 300 clients. Bengston sold the company in 1999 and later formed the predecessor to NFP Partners.

During the past six years, Bengston has served on two nonprofit boards as chairman of the audit and finance committees, as a treasurer, and in various fundraising project capacities. His experience as a nonprofit volunteer led him to his current venture of helping nonprofits. Except for his military duty, Bengston has been a small-business owner and entrepreneur for his entire career.

Bengston has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota followed by a Master in Business Administration from Michigan State University. He is married to Carol who helps in the business. Together they have two adult sons, an adult daughter, and four grandchildren. He is a life-long runner and in more recent years a cyclist. His other interests include reading, jazz, and travel. He belongs to the Colorado Society of CPAs and to Lions Club International, and is an active volunteer with a local public radio station.

As his interest and passion shifted primarily to the nonprofit sector, he sold his commercial accounts to another Colorado Sage partner, Accounting Systems, Inc. (ASI), which has been in business since 1991 and has more than 300 clients throughout the region. NFP partnered with ASI under the name “ASI Succeed in Nonprofit Solutions.” Beginning in 2009, the doing-business name of the company was changed to NFP Partners to establish a separate identity more closely connected to the not-for-profit sector. NFP Partners maintains a relationship with ASI for software product procurement.
